Road-Tripping With Rover: Tips for a Trip Your Dog Will Really ‘Dig’

Most dogs jump at the very mention of a car ride—provided that it’s not a trip to the vet, of course! Imagine how much your dog would enjoy the chance to watch ever-changing scenery through the car window; take in new scents as you drive past lakes, fields, and forests; and—best of all—spend plenty of time with his or her favorite person in the world: you! If your dog likes car rides and exploring new places, why not plan your next getaway so that he or she can come along?

However, if your companion animals can’t join you on your trip, it’s important to ensure that they’ll be safe and happy at home, which means finding a reliable sitter. You can look up sitters in your area at www.petswelcome.com. Be sure to screen sitters carefully and check their references.

A Pawfect Trip

Corey and MantePETA staff member Corey wouldn’t dream of leaving her canine companion, Mante, behind when she goes on vacation. For their recent trip from Virginia to Michigan—where Corey’s mom keeps a photo of Mante on the mantel—Corey and her husband outfitted the back of their vehicle with all the creature comforts a dog could want. Corey and her husband purchased their vehicle because its large back seat—with dual AC and heat—is more comfortable for Mante and outfitted the back seat with food, water, Mante’s favorite toy, and a foam pad covered with a sheet and a comforter and topped with Mante’s fluffy bed.

While they were in Michigan, Mante and Corey had a blast exploring nature trails and running at the state park. Mante loves to run so much that he bounds like a deer for the first mile! Mante also went for his first boat ride and had a great time. He sported an adorable matching sweater and hat for warmth and curled up on Corey’s lap, watching the world float by. Mante’s adventure ended with a visit to the local pet-supply store, where he got to sniff everything in the store and pick out a brand-new toy.
